Ground Cover Plants
Below are descriptions of desert ground cover plants.
Excellent for landscaping and xeriscaping gardens.
Yarrow or Achillea Ageratifolia.
Excellent desert plant, can grow in part sun or shade. 6" tall and 12" wide. White flowers in late spring. This is a perennial and heavy bloomer, has dense gray-green foliage.

Plumbago or Ceratostigma plumbaginoides
Can grow in part shade or sun. Moderate watering and is 12" tall and 24" wide. Deep blue flowers. Is sold as an annual in cooler temperature zones.
Yellow Iceplant or Delosperma Nubigenum
Low water. Excellent desert groundcover for a rock garden. Succulent foliage and evergreen. The plant has yellow daisy like folowers.
Yellow Rockrose or Helianthemum Nummularium
Low water. This low lying cover
has bright yellow flowers in the start of summer. Needs very little water and can tolerate extreme heat. Like alkaline soil. Trim at the end of summer for extended blooms.
Mat penstemon or penstemon caespitosus
Likes part sun or shade. Moderate watering. 4" tall and 12" wide. Beautiful purple-blue flowers. Glossy green foliage excellent for any rock garden. Blooms in early spring.

Shrubby Iceplant or Ruschia pulvinaris
Full Sun. 3" tall and 12" wide low water. Likes well drained rock garden. Hundreds of bright fuchsia pink flowers in the late spring.
Creeping Thyme or Thymus serpyllum
Like part sun or shade about 2' tall and 20" wide. Blooms in early summer with pink/purple flowers. A slow growing groundcover, can be planted between flagstones or in the patio. Moderate watering.

Verbena or Verbena peruviana
Full Sun. Medium water. Excellent spreading desert groundcover plant. Loves dry heat. Beautiful large lavender flowers. Clusters will bloom all summer long. Can be cut down to the nub during winter for early spring blooms.
Vinca Major or Giant perwinkle
Part sun or shade. Blooms in late spring. This desert groundcover
is an evergreen, can grow well in sun or deep shade. The flowers are light blue. This plant can easily overpower other plants.
