Magnolia Trees Landscaping


    evergreen tree Botanical name: Magnolia grandiflora 'Monlia'. The southern magnolia is an excellent ornamental tree for the southwest. Contray to popular belief magnolia trees will thrive in the desert heat, but they do require regular watering. They can also withstand temperatures down to zero degrees fahrenheit. All of them are evergeen and will bloom a large fragrant white flower usually in early summer.

    There are actually many varieties of Magnolia's that will do well in the southwest.



    Alta Southern Magnolia Grows to about 20ft tall and 10ft wide. It is a slow grower with a smaller type leaf

    D.D. Blanchard southern magnolia has a rusty brown under foliage grows to about 20ft tall and about 10ft wide. It is one of the faster growing Magnolia tree. It can tolerate temperatures down to -10 degrees farenheight.

    Green Back magnolia is a slow grower about 20-40ft. tall and 20ft. wide spread. It is a slow grower and requires regular watering especially when first planted.

    The Green Giant southern magnolia is a faster growing magnolia tree about 60ft. tall and 30ft. wide. in the southwest or just about any part of the U.S. It grows about 1ft per year but will grow much faster if watered and fertilized more often.

    Brackens Brown Beauty Magnolia: Grows to about 30-50ft tall and about 15-30ft wide it is a moderate grower with a soft brown color under the leaf.

    Heights and weidth listed on the tags are for areas with deep rich soil. Here in the southwest magnolias will typically not grow to the ulitmate heights listed on their description labels.
