    Trees of the southwest

     

     

  • Willows - Two varieties that do well in the southwest, the Globe and Weeping willow. Large trees 60ft high 50ft wide. Extremely fast grower. Click here for Photos of willow trees.
  • Tex Fan Ash- Large fan type leaves about 40ft high and 30ft wide. Magnifcient gold fall foliage. Drought tolerant, moderate to fast growth.
  • Berrinda Ash - Tall cyndrical shape southwest tree. Not as dense as other Ash trees. 50ft high and 20-30ft wide. Drought tolerant, moderate growth.
  • Arizona Ash - Very drought tolerant and faster growth than other ash trees. Beautiful golden yellow fall foilage. 40-50ft height and wide.
  • Mexican Elder - Evergreen in the lower elevation of the southwest. Moderate growth. Desert heat will stress tree. Very unusual bark and good ornamental tree.
  • Mediterranean Palm - Attractive multi-trunked habit forming rounded clumps. Attractive crown of large blue-green fan-like leaves. Use as an accent or barrier planting. Perfect for containers. Evergreen. Full to partial sun. Slow-growing clumps to 10 to 15 feet tall and wide
  • Mexican Fan Palm - Tall slender trunk is topped with a crown of large fan-shaped evergreen fronds. Provides a very tropical appearance to the landscape. Excellent as a street tree or specimen. Full sun. Fast-growing to 50 to 60 feet high, 10- to 15-foot wide crown.
  • Sago Palm - A very desirable evergreen plant displaying a stout trunk and long leaves with many narrow stiff leaflets. The leaves of this palm-like tree form an open rosette. Extremely slow growing to 8 feet tall, 3 to 6 foot spread.
  • Windmill Palm - Tree-like palm with distinctive hairy black fibers covering its slender, graceful trunk.Full to partial sun. Moderate grower to 25 to 30 feet and more tall.
  • Pinon - Evergreen tree about 20ft tall and wide. Will not produce pinons at lower elevations of the southwest. Drought tolerant. Slow growth.
  • Silk Tree - Also call the Mimosa tree. Hot cherry-pink blossoms are brighter and more fragrant than the old mimosa tree. Fast grower, Full sun, part shade. 35 feet tall and as wide.
  • Chitalpa Tree - Beautiful pink or white flowers. Leaves are not dense about 30ft tall and wide. Attractive ornamental tree.
  • Chinaberry - Super fast growing tree. Almost weed like growth. Yellowish balls in the summer. Excellent shade tree, 40ft wide and height.
  • Arizona Cypress - Excellent pyramidal form, useful as a windbreak or tall screen. Evergreen fast grower to 40 feet tall, 20 feet wide.r
  • Live Oak - Broad, spreading heavy-limbed crown shows interesting vase shape when young. Excellent ornamental evergren tree. Fast grower to 40 to 60 feet tall, 80 to 100 feet wide.
  • Red Shumard Oak - Moderate growing to 40 to 60 ft. tall and wide. Beautiful red/purple fall foilage. Drought tolerant.
  • Italian Cypress - Evergreen. Full sun and very fast grower. Up to 60 to 80 feet tall, 2 to 3 feet wide; can grow larger. Excellent border or windbreakage tree.
  • Honey Mesquite - About 30ft height and width. Sweet bean pods in fall. Thorny branches and very hardy in the lower elevation of the southwest.
  • Eucalyptus - Attractive blue-green shaped juvenile leaves, grows to about 60 or 80ft in height. 4-5ft width. Good ornamental tree. Not much shade.
  • Fruitless Mulberry - Extremely dense, boldly branched round-topped tree. Large, deeply lobed bright green leaves may attain a bright yellow coloring in fall. Good shade provider for large lawn areas. 30 to 35ft tall and wide. Excellent shade tree.
  • Western Cottonwood - Handsome, narrow pyramidal form displays new red-bronze foliage on red-tinted stems. An excellent screen or windbreak. Perfect tree for landscape enframement. Produces no fruit. Deciduous. Full sun. Fast grower to 50 to 70 feet tall, 8 to 12 feet wide.
  • Vitex - Beautiful large shrub or tree for the patio area; aromatic gray-green leaves back terminal showy spikes of fragrant lilac blooms. Fast grower to 15 to 25 feet tall and wide.
  • Fairy Duster - Short shrub with beautiful red blooms in the summer. About 10ft height and wide. Very drought tolerat.
  • Blue Palo Verde - Drought tolerant tree multi trunks about 40ft tall and 30ft wide. Throns on limbs but on main trunk. Beautiful yellow flowers in the spring.
  • Red tip Yucca - Tall spikes hold deep red or yellow flowers almost year-round; effective plant for rock garden, landscape accent, or in containers. Moderate grower to 3 to 4 feet tall and wide; flower stalks to 4 to 6 feet.
  • Lemon Bottlebrush - Hummingbirds love this showy shrub with masses of scarlet bottlebrush shaped flowers throughout the warm season. Moderate grower to 10 to 12 feet tall and wide, can be larger.
  • Austrian Pines - A handsome evergreen tree with densely branched conical form when young, becomes umbrella shaped with age. Fast grower to 40 to 60 feet tall, 15 to 25 feet wide, larger with age.
  • Blue Spruce - Superb evergreen conifer, its needles with rich blue coloring. Dense-branching, broadly pyramidal form makes a wonderful living Christmas tree. An excellent landscape specimen. Full sun. Slow grower to 10 to 15 feet tall, 10 to 12 feet wide.
  • Peter's Fig tree - Attractive garden tree its bold branching structure has an interesting winter appearance. Especially sweet, greenish-yellow fruit produced each summer. Needs hot exposure to ripen fruit in coastal areas. Deciduous. Full sun. Moderate grower to 15 to 25 feet tall and wide.
