    Xeriscaping Plants



    What is Xeriscaping? The word derives from the Greek word xeros, which means dry. Many non gardening folks think xeriscaping plants are nothing but dry cactus and brownish plants mixed with rocks and desert type of landscaping.

    Nothing could be further from the truth. It is a method of using plants, desert flowers, trees and shrubs that grow well without much water or maintenance in your area. Many of these Desert type plants will have lots of great color and can be considered perennial plants.

    Xeriscaping is a technique using environmentally friendly trees, shrubs and low water plants. It is also a way to help beautify your garden, backyard, or business property. Remember it does not mean just plain old cactus and dirt landscaping. There are hundreds of plants that you can use.
    To add wonderous color to your plain, drab landscape.

    Below are just a few examples of what you can use. Remember be sure to see what type of plants are good for your zone area.

    Many of these type of plants have bright color and some are evergreen.

    Remember to use a good drip System to conserve water.

    xeriscaping plantsOcotillo photo - Ocotllio or Fouquieria splendes. Very Distinctive shrub. Bright orange tubular spring flowers that attract hummingbirds. Full sun. 10' ft spacing, No fertilizer. Very low water once established.


    xeriscaping plantsClick here for larger photo Mexican Sage or Salvia leucantha Purple spikes with small white blooms and arching stems. Full sun to partial shade. Up to 4' ft tall and 5' wide. Low and drought tolerant shrub. Excellent Hedge for xeriscaping garden.

    Chocolate Flower or Berlandiera lyrata Small perennial produces yellow flowers with a distinct chocolate fragrance. Makes an excellent sensory garden. Full Sun, 1'ft tall 2'ft wide. Low water usage. Remove old flowers to encourage blooming.

    Spanish Bayonet or Yucca aloifolia Native plant resembles a palm. 4" white flower clusters. Excellent xeriscaping shrub. Up to 10'ft tall 3'ft wide. Moderate water usage.

    Cider Gum Tree or Eucalyptus gunnii Evergreen. White flowers in the spring. Full Sun up to 75'ft tall and 30'ft wide. Low water usage and drought tolerant.

    Red Oleander or Evergreen shrub with large single bright red flowers blooming all summer. 15'ft tall and 8'ft wide. Fertilize in spring. Low water usage once established.
